Roma in Kosovo Serbia

In 1999 after three months of NATO bombing Serbian  army conceded defeat and return from the territories of Kosovo. The Albanian militia who were fighting against the Serbian  army soon came down from their hidings and there began a new cycle of violence against the Serbians and also the minority Roma community. In 2008, Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbian rule and the fate of minorities particularly Roma people (Gypsies) in this newly born nation has become more worse. They became vulnerable to both the warring groups – Albanians and Serbians.

Marginalized over the centuries, the Roma have lived on the fringes of European society since their forefather’s left India.

For centuries they built the churches and forts for empires after empire. But they have always had to live outside the mainstream society. Today they continue to be outsiders even in North America where they fled from subjugation. Large majority of Roma are economically disadvantaged and forced to live like scavengers in many nations.  They are Europe’s forgotten people.

But even today, they bear various proofs of their Indian lineage, in their language, their customs and their traditions…

PURANO MANUSH A is the story of Roma people struggling to locate themselves in the world’s newest nation and longing to link back with their ancestral land “India”

Suresh Pillai, a voracious cultivator of books, imaginations, a workaholic towards his dedication, I – was not surprised by his making of excellent documentary films. He showed his excellence of creativity in the making of, “Purano Manush”. I, will not be surprised with better documentaries he will create.
